.
The “House of Wonder” is an absolute “must” to understand Zanzibar’s heritage.
Among many others this is a reason why Stone Town has been awarded World Heritage Site status by UNESCO in the year 2000.
Spice Tour
Zanzibar is well known as the "Spice Island".
The famous spice farms are in Kidichi - the west of Zanzibar.
Your nose will guide you.
Many exotic spices grow on this fruitful island: vanilla, nutmeg, curcuma,
cinnamon and of course the famous cloves, just to name a few.
Besides the tourism, the clove trade is still an important part of the
economy.
In former times the spices were transported with the famous dhows. The trade
was dependant on the changing winds. In the times of Kusi, the southwest
monsoon (from April until November) boats were sailing towards the east and
returned with the support of Kaskasi, the northeast monsoon, loaded with
precious fabrics.and goods .
Jozani Forrest
On the way to the east coast you should not miss the opportunity to discover
Jozani Forrest. Here you will find the rare species of the red colobus monkey -
native to Zanzibar
Fortunately, due to the efforts of the Government and private initiatives, the
population is increasing again.
In this national park you can hike through the
rain forest and the mangrove swamps.
Zanzibar Shores
The north - The traditional village Mkokotoni with its small fish market is
located in a protected lagoon.
Nungwi is located in the northernmost part of the island with beautiful beaches
where the tides are barely visible. This plqace is suitable for young
people or night owls – discos, beach bars, restaurants and the
legendary rastafaris are to be found here.
The East – Walks along
white long sandy beaches, the roar of the reef and behind the deep blue Indian Ocean, local women who collect seaweed, fishermen
who catch small fish with cast-nets in the shallow water.
The coming and going
of the tides is obvious. During low tide you can walk up to the reef. All this is
to be found on Zanzibar’s
east coast.
The South
The rough
sea, spacious sandy beaches, gorgeous cliffs and the unique vegetation reminds you
of Brittany.
